Hi, I’m Maaz.
Clearer trail information. Better planning. More confident adventures. I’m glad you’ve found your way here.
I’m Maaz Basharat, the founder and managing editor of Mountainer Journey. My background is in digital research and content development, and I created this site to make practical hiking information easier to find, compare and understand.
Every memorable hike starts before the trailhead — with choosing a route that fits your time, ability, interests and the conditions you may face. My role is to ask the questions readers are likely to have, check reliable sources, and turn scattered details into clear guidance.
The name of a trail was easy to find. Everything else wasn’t.
While researching hiking destinations, I kept finding the same problem: discovering the name of a trail was easy, but finding all the information needed to decide whether that trail was suitable could take much longer.
A route may look short on a map but include a steep climb. A popular waterfall may require a reservation. A trail described as dog-friendly may still have rules, rough surfaces or seasonal restrictions that matter. Important details are often scattered across park websites, maps and land-manager notices.
I started Mountainer Journey to bring those details together in a clear, readable format — focused on the questions people usually ask while planning: How difficult is the route? How long should it take? Where can I park? Is there a fee? Are dogs allowed? What should I confirm before I leave?
Practical answers before you choose a trail.
We do not assume that one trail is right for everyone. Available time, fitness, experience, weather and personal comfort can all affect whether a route is suitable. Our job is to give enough context for you to make an informed choice of your own — whether you’re:
First-time hikers
Looking for straightforward guidance without assumed experience.
Families
Comparing realistic, manageable options for a day out.
Visitors
Planning a trip in an unfamiliar area.
Experienced hikers
Trying to understand the differences between several routes.
Three areas, one goal: make the next step clearer.
Hiking Destinations
Regional trail roundups and destination guides that help you compare routes, waterfalls, overlooks, mountain hikes and full-day adventures.
Hiking Guides
Straightforward advice about preparation, navigation, trail etiquette, seasonal conditions and the mistakes that can make a trip harder than expected.
Hiking Gear
Practical information about what may be useful for a particular trail, season or type of hike, without making every item sound essential.
How we research our guides
Our articles follow a practical, research-led process.
We start with real planning questions
Distance, difficulty, estimated time, route type, access, parking, fees, reservations, pet rules and important cautions.
We check official sources
National and state parks, local land managers, conservation organizations and official trail systems — especially for closures, permits and access rules that change.
We compare, not just list
We explain who each hike may suit, what makes it distinct, and what could make it more challenging.
We review important details
Before publication, we check structure, sources and practical details, and update articles when official information changes or we receive a reliable correction.
Research-led, and honest about what that means.
Mountainer Journey’s current destination guides are research-led. We do not turn research into a personal story or claim that a trail was personally completed or a product was personally tested when that is not true.
If an article includes genuine first-hand experience from a contributor, that person and their role are identified clearly — so you always know whether guidance comes from documented research, personal experience, or a combination of both.
What you can expect from every article.
Useful before impressive
We focus on information that can help you make a real decision.
Clear without oversimplifying
We use straightforward English while keeping important context.
Honest about uncertainty
Conditions, ability and hiking times vary, so estimates are guidance, not guarantees.
Responsible
We encourage readers to follow official rules, respect closures and protect the places they visit.
Editorially independent
A commercial relationship does not guarantee positive coverage or an editorial link. Any material connection is disclosed clearly.
How the Editorial Team byline works
Research-led articles may be published under the Mountainer Journey Editorial Team byline. I oversee topic research, source checking, content structure and editorial review — the byline represents that process, not first-hand trail or product experience. When a contributor does have genuine first-hand experience, they’re identified clearly.
Safety and responsible hiking
No website can account for every person’s fitness, health, experience or the conditions present on a particular day. Weather, water levels, wildfire activity, hunting closures, damaged trails and land-management rules can change quickly. Use our articles as a starting point, then check current alerts and rules with the official land manager before travelling. Carry an appropriate map, prepare for the conditions, turn around when a situation feels unsafe, and follow Leave No Trace principles and all posted guidance.
Help us keep the guides useful.
Spot something that needs fixing?
Trail information changes, and even careful research can miss something. If you notice an outdated detail, a broken official link or a factual error, email us. Please include the article URL, the information that may need correction and, when possible, a link to an official source. We review credible corrections and update content when the evidence supports a change.
